I switched to a mac for my studio computer and am looking for a simple, clean, formant and pitch shifting tool. This is just for making weird vocal effects- I really don't want any overly complicated fancy plugins that do way more.

What exactly is the difference between the fundamental frequency of a
sound and the first formant frequency?

Think of a formant as the output of a filter.
Trained singers
can shift their formant frequencies to track the pitch they are singing,
in order (head
cavities, throat, etc).

Have you ever had to use bit shifting in real programming projects? Most (if not all) high level languages have shift operators in them, but when would you actually need to use them?

Of various numbers of bits (they're not all byte-aligned), and therefore you need to bit-shift them when Fourier transform — FFT and it's Cooley-Tukey technique will require use bit shifting operations.
