Are you sure the API URL to FreeDB is correct in the module?
Can you try HTTP instead of CDDBP?

I'm not really thinking of a cddb/freedb type of situation where you hand them a hash based on the number...

I don't know.
It isn't checking freedb.
That is why it shows up under k3b and not the other rippers .
K3b seems to be getting the artist name and song title off the CD where as the other rippers don't.

I would suggest researching algorithms.
Automatically, they are not good enough, not even freedb.
