If students get a D grade, they applications are usually referred out to the actual department where.
I work for an admissions office in a university and you must have at least grade c or above.

Honestly, your gcse's won't matter when it gets round to that, you just need a good amount with good grades regardless of subject to get into college, it's what you do there that matters.

If you plan on going to college, the majority of colleges expect a minimum grade of C and if you don't have that grade, you will have to re-stake your GCSE exams at college....
You're gonna want to work on your Maths grade, though.

I don't study English nor am I at Cambridge, but you will undoubtedly get a range of GCSE grades from students studying there.
There is a thread specific for Oxford/Cambridge GCSE grades.

GCSE results are just to get you into sixth form and college....
As long as you can get an A* - C grade in it (If you get 5 A* - Cs you can go to college) it doesn't matter what subject you take.
As 'soft' and 'hard' subjects at GCSE.
