I'm a new 2009 SportWagen TDI owner (4 days so far), and a ham radio operator.
Any other hams out there with specific recommendations on installing ham gear in the car? I'm seeking advice on providing good power to equipment installed in the rear as well...

The TM-V71A head is mounted in front of the shifter .
If you need any a Tiny-Trak 3 and a GPS antenna/receiver.
And there are better options now at HRO or any other ham store to buy mounts that do not need drilling.

Ham Radio Install? I had my (Ham) Amateur radio mounted on a custom console in my 05 and now want to install it in my 08..anyone install one of these and if so any suggestions on where to mount it? obviously not on the dash..but was wondering if you used...

I don't have a new truck, but I would say anywhere that gives you good visibility of the screen, and doesn't block anything... .
What model radio are you using? If you have one that's remote-head capable (857d, IC-7000, etc) your install options increase greatly .

Installed my 2 meter amateur (ham) transceiver in the KJ. Mounted it as many have on the passenger side of the console. Not too many mounting options in the KJ unless you have a rig with a remote head.
Ran 10 ga wire from the rig directly to the battery...

(Do you have any GPS at the moment?) Do you have a smartphone with GPS? There are plenty of tracking apps which would allow you to record a GPX track.

That's not the issue, the GPS doesn't work even with the radar and everything else on the boat off.
