When using GParted to shrink a 250GB partition to 190GB, I thought it will move the 60GB of data back into the 190GB region and call it done. But instead it reads the 190GB of data twice, the first time taking about 1 hour and the second time for 2 hours...

This might be an answer: (I found that when all actions are completed) When "details" in GParted.
Is using Ubuntu 9.04 installation disc to re-partition almost just as good as GParted? Do you need to some how stop the installation after the re-partition? thanks. the reason of using this method is that GParted 0.4.6-1 cannot recognize my hard drive...

If GParted cannot see your drive then Ubuntu's tool.
But if GParted does not recognize your drive, then Ubuntu's tool will probably also have problems.

When used correctly that you not try and shrink too close to the amount of data on the partition - leave at least 10% free.
But, I have used GParted many, many times.

I've used GParted for ages and have never had a problem, using the LiveCD edition to be specific.

You can't shrink.
I think you're ok and then choose to allocate space to any partition while the system is running .
shrinking/rearranging on my PC, and GParted took over an hour for some operations.
GParted cannot shrink the partition since it says there are 5 bad sectors that are hardware related. (Scan disk on Windows XP can't fix them). So, after booting up the GParted disc, I used the Terminal to do a ntfsresize --bad-sectors --size 63G /dev/...

GParted does all.
To do that you must use a disk partitioning tool as well, for example fdisk(8) .

If I was you, I would give Gparted another try, it can be used as a Linux boot disk and can resize reports of problems when resizing file systems using gparted-live-0.5.0-3.

If the volume you are shrink already has data on it, you can only shrink the volume to where space.
