Gnome 3 "issues" (Gnome Shell) has anyone looked at this? Gnome desktop I've used since about 2002 under linux. It worked great etc.
I had heard some misgivings and groanings about Gnome 3.

Check one way to set the language (or more broadly speaking, the "locale") on your computer.
Starting with Gnome 3, you have to write your default keyboard layout to your xorg-config.

As for persistence across reboots, you should be able to get most of it by setting up your session to remember what applications... .
In this case, you need port 5900 open.
Check your firewall settings, it's probably blocking the port for the remote viewer .

On gnome-shell 3.4 (Ubuntu Pangolin), I have a dual-screen setup with different resolution and desktop switching enabled on both screens.
I noticed that the two screens get mixed up quite often; for instance, after suspending and resuming the computer...
