Now, if you remove xfce, you probably removed some dependencies gnome would require to run.
Groupinstall "Xfce" AFAIK, the 'problem' is, xfce is/was based on gnome, so they share many dependencies.

The tilde ( ~ ) signifies your home directory, so the file output.txt will be under your home folder containing... .
Redirect it to a file:
$ example-command > ~/output.txt
Where example-command is the command that is producing the output you want to save .

I have recently switched from Gnome to Xfce on Ubuntu 9.04.
In Gnome, the first time I entered the passphrase, it prompted me to save the passphrase.
In Xfce however, I am prompted for the passphrase every time I connect.

I was able to somehow manage logging into xfce and remove unity and the gnome panel. But I notice that there are still elements of gnome running in my system. This is what I see when I do ps ax | grep gnome.

It appears that several of those are dependencies of Gnome-Do of those are dependencies of Gnome....
The same way you can add Xfce components listed to be sure it is safe to remove.
You will get the list of all gnome stuff installed.

I used to have the caps lock and control swapped in GNOME, but when I upgraded to Ubuntu 9.04 I also changed my desktop environment to Xfce. I have the following line in my xorg.conf:
Option "XkbOptions" "ctrl:nocaps"
But that doesn't seem to make a difference...

To like Gnome 3, but I just couldn't, and Xfce clicked for me straight away; I already like it better than I ever did Gnome 2.
