I what to record all my website searches with google analytics but the problem is my search links look like this

Yes, you can create a custom filter that rewrites URL /search/<category>/<query> to ?q .
As well as the Searches tracked in Site Search.

Is it at all possible to submit any form of a regex to google web search? Even a wildcard character would be interesting tool. Or is it literal strings and options only ?

Google supports wildcards, actually!
No regular expressions, unfortunately, I doubt even google have the server capacity to perform regex searches....
Google Code Search supports regular expressions.
Powerful tool regardless.

Maybe if you register both sites, and add a Sitemap , you can make Google aware of the transition that determines the frequency ....
