Just go myself a new computer and thinking of how set it up.
I have win7 HP and will probably install at least some version of Ubuntu on it shortly to have dual boot. Might come other Linux distros too in the future.

Easiest thing - A nas network share that will just work in both or a USB pen drive!
Apart from that, As Ubuntu can read from NTFS but Windows can't read from EXT2/4 etc .

I currently have a windows XP machine and two internal hard drives. I want to dual boot with Windows 7 on the second drive. I'll have the license for it in August. This will not be the release candidate.

As for dual and what you....
Makes keeping track of which HDD easier.
Use EasyBCD to set up the dual boot afterwards appears no matter which letter its been assigned.
That way you don't have to fear formatting it.

There I set /boot as the mountpoint for the small partition and put the rest of the Ubuntu....
Then ran the Ubuntu Desktop installation and chose manual partioning .
A new small first primary Ext2 partition for /boot with GParted did the trick.

WIN7-XP DUAL BOOT FILES - to save to backup
I have win7 and XP as dual boot on same HDD. WinXP installed first. Works fine.
I use a backup/restore program to make images of each O/S - seperately and regularly.
However, it's not made for a dual boot machine...

I boot directly into UE (my primary - hdd 1) and can select XP from the UE boot menu - XP is located on my secondary hdd - they do not share partitions on the same ....
Actually, each OS is on it's own separate hdd.

I am planning on installing linux soon to dual boot with windows 7. I am running out of room on my current HDD though, so i thought before installing linux i would buy a new one and just install linux on that drive. What do you guys think of this plan...

You can share swap partitions between the two swap space then .
That you saved to restore you dual boot capability.
