In your setup, I would personally have a 50GB partition for Ubuntu and then you have... .
Easiest thing - A nas network share that will just work in both or a USB pen drive! Apart from that, As Ubuntu can read from NTFS but Windows can't read from EXT2/4 etc .

As for dual and what you....
Makes keeping track of which HDD easier.
Use EasyBCD to set up the dual boot afterwards appears no matter which letter its been assigned.
That way you don't have to fear formatting it.

There I set /boot as the mountpoint for the small partition and put the rest of the Ubuntu....
Then ran the Ubuntu Desktop installation and chose manual partioning .
A new small first primary Ext2 partition for /boot with GParted did the trick.

Dd if=/dev/zero of=/boot/swap.img bs=1M count=512 , create the swap filesystem with mkswap /boot/swap.img mount....
You can share swap partitions between the two swap space then .
That you saved to restore you dual boot capability.
