I normally start by finding the HKLM key that the software uses - hopefully something sane http://live.sysinternals.com/ for procmon.exe
9 times out of 10, it is just writing to HKLM\Software the app sometimes that works....

Even if you're going with something free, you'd be better off with Avast, Avira, or Panda... .
Before you do anything, you may want to check this site out, http://www.malwareremoval.com/ I would recommend replacing AVG with something better .
