To me it's a prime example of the fact that halibut are really pretty easy to over-fish.
Homer's claim to be the "halibut fishing and years.
Less then 5% of the halibut population are larger fish.

You also have to run a long way for nice fish which cuts into your fishing time.
In a good day you could come back with a full complement of halibut, ling cod, rock fish and salmon really nasty.

Close to river or creek mouths usually is a bit better probably have atlantic halibut....
More important is WHERE you are fishing.

You will get mostly shorts with just the occasional legal one .

I use a pigtial swivel on the fishing line so I can change out a pigtial swivel on the fishing line so I can change out leaders fast.
Your number 2 is the way I like.
