I now have a reasonable collection of planes, most of which I use from time to time with the article.

A co-worker sold me a hand full of hand planes for cheap. ($25)
Included are:
Stanley #4
Stanley # 220
Miller Falls block plane
Both say "made in USA" (I'm thrilled!). Both have wood handles and forward knobs.

Generally a 9" plane like your No 4 is considered a smoothing plane.
As you like you got a fairly decent deal.
I use the block plane all the time for everything.
Are the most used planes in my small-ish arsenal.

Their early planes were made by Stanley or Millers Falls, but by then I don't know who was making it.
Powr-Kraft (Montgomery Wards) planes from the seventies have that style handle but in black.

Of thick glass - for flattening waterstones and lapping plane irons, chisels and the plane soles - $0 Bed Rock planes there is a little movement but it is restricted by the Frog Adjuster Tab and Screw.

Over the last 5-6 years I have collected about half a dozen hand planes. I keep seeing posts on here at about old planes that have been re-flattened and I have to wonder how bad they must have been to need that. Am I missing something? Is this a process...

But 90% of the time a scraper is the finishing step, any problems with a LV ....
I can not speak for Lee Valley planes as I don't own any other than my Medium Shoulder plane and smooth surfaces with hand planes alone, sure.
