I've struggled to find data on the compressed thicknesses of head gaskets for golfs.
So, I'm starting a thread, to collect data, and later it can be moved into the FAQs if it works out. So far, I've found the gasket to be much thicker than I expected....

Elring ABF/ADY gasket - multi layer....
2.1mm at the fire ring.
Elring 9A/2E gasket - composite.
Comp piston hit edge of 2nd gen 051103373 KR head = Minor ABF system error! 1.4mm Group A head gasketNew, uncompressed thicknesses.

I fear the head gasket is failing on my 8v, it's losing water and smoking quite badly whilst idling. It's never overheated or is there any evidence of water in the oil.
Before I strip it down is there anything else it could be? just grasping at straws...

Is yours doing the same as mine did in the pic? if it is sadly your head gasket has gone-jet 8v Mk2 as it had warped when the head gasket went, so its worth doing !
My mk2 was red too I would for the piccy It would be silly....

I see Mr Gasket makes a .020 thick steel shim head gasket. I think it may be just the ticket for swapping 781's onto my 396. I plan on coating them well with copper coat before installing them. Any problem with using these on the street?

They should be fine.
I also find that these head gasket show up as .018" thick afterRod,
GM used steel shim gaskets for many many years as the OEM gasket.
That was so far out that it had to be done .

Ok so the head gasket went on the 8v today.
i have never taken a head off of a golf GTI so i wanted to know a few things
Are these engines fitted with stretch bolts to be replaced each time ?
And i want to port the head a little, not too much just a little...

For head gasket use Mk3.
For head gasket use g60 triple plate metal one.
The studs and nuts whilst it's off They are stretch bolts so need replacing .

2004 4-Runner with 113,000 miles. Cylinder 6 misfire code, and the usual symptoms of blown head gasket. Take it to Toyota dealer and they say it's blown head gasket. I've done the searches and this appears to be a common problem.
