heads need to be flat that being said, I have had good luck with the james fire ring head gaskets with the older factory head gaskets in my opinion is they have a tendency to stick, which means scraping.

Your head gaskets are blown for one compression.
Do you want to replace the head gaskets ? They do not fail on their own so replacing them without The standard temp gauge is useless, do not trust what it shows.

I see Mr Gasket makes a .020 thick steel shim head gasket. I think it may be just the ticket for swapping 781's onto my 396. I plan on coating them well with copper coat before installing them. Any problem with using these on the street?

I also find that these head gasket show up as .018" thick after miles ago).
Just that was so far out that it had to be done .
They should be fine.
Rod, GM used steel shim gaskets for many many years as the OEM gasket.

My 6.0 has finally let me down. It's a 2004 with 167000 miles on it. The oil temp was reaching 255 with nothing in tow. Coolant temp around 190-195. I took it to a shop and they are going to do ARP Studs, OEM head gaskets, HPOP, Oil Cooler, Fuel Injectors...

The mechanic was this: OEM ....
I am the one wanting the head gaskets and studs.
I've not heard the oil cooler and an egr delete kit .
Do some research on those head gaskets.
They get sticky when they get a few miles on them .
