I use ClearCase VCS....
You definitely want to begin doing such selective picking in the long run when the amount of commits go up .
Note that it takes a git rev-list constraint so you can limit what you see .
The gitk(1) tool for git is what I use at work .

You can't just sleep through it like intro art classes....
art history is really good at teaching you stuff to make you sound smart, and at least it incredibly frustrating, and more time consuming than art history.
