Questions about hiking the Grand Canyon -specifically the North Kaibab Trail. Can we hike the 14 miles up in one day?
My bride-to-be and I are going on trip to the American Southwest including three days and two nights at the Grand Canyon (North Rim)....
Answer Snippets (Read the full thread at metafilter):
In my experience....
Is it fine to start that hike in the afternoon and reach the campground before it getsI did the down-up hike from the South Rim (South Kaibab to Phantom Ranch for the night, and then back up via Bright Angel).

Or this one idea, it's not a hike per se, but it's a paved-bicycle something cool and a decent hike? The Lava tubes look pretty cool.

You go on an 18 mile hike.
The first half of the hike, you hike 3 miles per hour.
The second half of the hike, you hike 1 mile per hour.
The average of three and one is two.
So, your average hiking speed for the whole hike is 2 miles per hour.
Right?

T = total hiking time in hours.
Speed = distance in miles over time in hours.
18 miles divided by 12 hours equals 1.5 mph speed for the hike.
Mileage (as I assumed) this means it was a 12 hour hike...

Day-hike lighting (flashlights, headlamps) - what do you take?
Just curious to see what other folks are carrying/using. What lighting do you take along on day-hikes? You can vote in the poll and comment on your choice if you want.
I once carried both...

I hike a lot....
Since I like to travel light, I often perfect for me .
And provides enough light to hike on a dark trail for hours (or act as an emergency signal), it's hard-hike, I normally just take a single-CR123 flashlight.

First couple of days on the SCT aren't hard.
Tasmanian walk was a day hike from near the Glenorchy tip to the Longley pub, including Montague around 10 hours, covered well over 30kms though.

My wife and I are going out west in early June (Grand Canyon, Bryce, Zion, and the likes). We do some hiking here, but nothing that sneakers don't handle. We'd like to do some heavier stuff out there, but neither of us has a good pair of hiking boots/...

Dubrovnik Cable Car and Hike Down Srd Hill
Has anyone rode the Dubrovnik Cable Car up and walked down Srd Hill? How much time do I need to plan to return to the Old City of Dubrovnik? Does the trail return near the Old City of Dubrovnik? Thanks!

If we hike....
Website that it takes around 1/2 hour to hike down the hill in Dubrovnik and that a one-way ticket can take the cable car round trip, it does not make sense to spend an few extra hours trying to hike you for it.
