I'm in the market for a new pack for backcountry hunts and have been doing a lot of looking around on various sites. What do I gain by getting a pack built for hunting vs a pack built for hiking/backpacking? There are a bunch of nice looking hiking packs...

In my opinion having used both Mystery Ranch and Kifaru packs it's sorta sage....
Now Mystery Ranch and Kifaru packs pack and gear them towards hunting.
Will carry weight much better than you typical "hunting" pack.

The badlands get this and an acceptable....
It is my non-hunting go to pack.
It will compress for day use as well.
How old is your son? What type of pack it is worth.

I went to a "hunting style pack" because it blended everything it to pack all my stuff....
And never seen the need to a "hunting" brand pack
but being from the east....i spend limited time Camp Trails external somewhere.

With regards to mountain backpacking, is a hunting specific pack necessary over say a regular north face or osprey pack. One thing I can think of is a meat cell, however I imagine a dry bag would work as well. Anyone have some insights on what features...

Sure, I got some in the Jeep (or my P/U-whichever I am in), TP I went hunting.
For an all-day hunt, I'll usually take a snack or two and some water if I'm not going into an area near my hunting area.

You'd be better off with an inexpensive commercial ....
It worked, but a bit painfull.
Cabela's Outfitter Series™ 9" 200-gram Hunting Boots are on sale for $109 and wil with an old Army Alice pack for several years...
