You really need to investigate what caused the ice dam in the first place.
Well I think there is no real way to get rid of an ice dam, just wait for warmer weather and sun.

It wouldn't be a proper winter if there wasn't at least one thread on ice dams here on FM. Of course very few folks are going to be having problems this year unless there is a dramatic chance in the weather.
What's your favorite solution for ice dams?...

Living in Massachusetts, I am getting hit hard with snow. I have a house whereby the west side does not get much sunlight. Therefore, I have ice forming where the dormers and roof meet. I assume these are ice dams. My fear is what happens when it melts...

Thaw cycle that can contribute to the "Ice Dam" effect, and if a portion of the roof the Ice Dam area with a pole, then that might be an option to use a tool called Roof Rake.
