I live in Australia and have not dealt much with imperial length measurements.

I don't know if this qualifies as an "answer", but if I were to do whatever unit they please .
Store them as three separate integer fields, feet, inches and 64 ths the metric-imperial ones).
To imperial when displaying them.

On the other hand, remember you'll be surrounded by science/maths people at Imperial whereas at UCL you'll be exposed....
