It is a baby, not done growing yet It is probably because he is a chihuahua mix and he is only 4.5 months old so he's going to be small, he might also be the runt of the pack .

I've noticed that most equipment made since the late 70's / early eighties on has been about 17 inches, give or take a little. Is there a reason for this? Is it an actual standard, like in car audio?

Just measured my Sansui '87 amp and it's 17.5 inches with my 1980 rack opening of 18 5/8ths inch.
To 17.7 inches wide is kind of a standard it seems.

As made clear by the other answers, printing from the web is tricky business, limiting the clientWidth like Bill did, combined with CSS that uses inches, to have something.
