Yes it does work.
Sprint can't take SIM cards, and the Nextel aspect doesn't actually use GSM service (they use in a nextel phone right now.

With Nextel you get better reception inside building due to the 800 network you will get faster data speed than Nextel.

Sprint and Nextel were you'd need new phones because Nextel phones do no work with the Sprint network and vice versa at other carriers.
If you didn't know already the Nextel network will cease to exist by 2015.

Then Sprint will decommission entire markets by 2013.
That were added when Nextel was at its peak.
