Discussions about knee high socks

Why are guys wearing knee high socks?? I was watching some DG vi'ds and see people wearing knee high socks. Why? Is it to help with scratches in the woods? Does it help against Poison Ivy? I know it won't help with bug bites. Just wondering. To wear shorts with the knee high socks, cause ive seen some asians doing it but i thought that was mostly a hispanic thing, just wanna know who started that.
