Is there any way to detect/default to the native resolution for an LCD monitor (on Windows XP)?
(this is an older monitor and I haven't found the documentation on it)

As long as you have the correct drivers installed....
Otherwise, just keep unlikely to damage an LCD simply by briefly switching to an out-of-bounds res.
A resolution higher than the maximum for the monitor, assuming that it can detect it.

What are the most important criteria in determining LCD monitor quality?
The monitor on my MacBook Pro is noticeably easier to read than any of my other LCD monitors and I believe this is primarily due to it's high contrast ratio. But it begs the question...

A good monitor will have 90+ percent coverage, a great monitor will go over 100.

A friend has a Power Macintosh 8500/180 (yes a bit of a classic from the mid-90s!) and wishes to upgrade the monitor from the huge CRT it is now using to LCD.
Looking at the specs of this machine it has a DB15 display port, which it seems can output via...

Let me multisync monitor from an auction site with a native resolution that matched the output.
It worked well.
Hi! I used that kind of adapter for the LCD on an old Macintosh as well.

I still use a 19" CRT monitor for my development (both at home and work), but now I'm looking for a wide-screen LCD monitor as my next purchase.
As much as I look into it, I can't really find one that pleases me. The problem is that the LCD grid (the ...

We all use two monitors....
With one large monitor you spend it still holds true; that 2 monitors is far better than 1 large monitor.
In this monitor, and use a standard 19" LCD monitor to run the site / app in.

At my office we are planning to deploy widescreen LCD monitors in portrait mode. We bought one for testing (Samsung T220 unpivotable, so we adapted a pivotable support for it) and it doesn't have a good viewable angle in this mode, despite the specifications...

So as I see it you have two options:
Buy an IPS LCD....
Also the monitor was not designed to be viewed in portrait mode.
You might want to look into naturally pivot-able LCD's or screens that utilize IPS LCD technology right there.

It's a known issue that ClearType doesn't render text well when lcd monitors are rotated to portrait orientation. ClearType is primarily tuned for a vertically oriented RGB stripes (your average everyday lcd monitor in horizontal mode).
It would be awesome...

You'd be after a specific technology to get that, and you'd pay a lot for such a non-TN monitor between portrait and landscape (which would make your special monitor useless) you could look.

I've got an old 17" LCD that I've had for nearly 9 years now but still works pretty well. It's been my secondary monitor for a few years, but I just got a new 24" monitor, so my current main LCD (19") will become the new secondary screen.
Any good suggestions...
