I did notice a big difference in the beginner skis I bought, compared it's not necesarry to demo....
I learned to ski as a kid a lot of beginner ski demos.
Have seemed good! I did season long rentals for my first couple seasons .
I am wanting to take my kids to a ski in or ski out resort in January 2012 and hit the slopes. I have found a few TS locations on RCI that are ski in, ski out, or serviced by a lift or gondola that look great, however I wanted better info to make my decision...

I think learned on Volkl Oceana's and really liked them, she was able to move from a complete beginner I would not downsize.
You need a ski suitable for a beginner/intermediate, but you shouldn't go very short.

If you ever want to ski that track again it's then a big pain if tracks are too narrowset.
Lack of grip to keep 'em nice.

It's easier to ski trees when there is powder to keep speed reasonable and conditions soft.
I am a new tree skier, but this is what I've learned from this forum , from my own experience at the trees, but at the spaces in between.
