I'm trying to remember the old superstition. Are you supposed to give a penny with a knife as a gift, or are you supposed to give a penny for a knife that someone's given you?

Always give should pay the giver of a knife a penny so that you are buying it, because the gift of a knife will cut the friendship, as every right-....
As I've known it, never take a knife as a gift - it will cut off the relationship.

It's not the "best" knife....
If you don't know what you want for the third knife just get the first two and wait on
the third of the money on a good chef's knife -- either a Japanese style gyuto
or a thin European carbon steel blade.
