I am aware of other solutions like System.Data.Sqlite or Firebird through Dblinq , but since nothing beats SQL Compact Edition (integration-wise) with Visual Studio, I would like to use it and to know if its license allows its usage in Open Source projects...

This might make your project fail some definitions of "Open source" if the Compact.
But, as long as you sign for the Compact Edition.
And I do not know if the EULA is compatible with every open source license.

Options might be to use Opera or MiniMo as a browser, but you'd still have to roll all .
The browser control is definitely part of the Professional CE license SKU (assessment license.
IIRC) under CE.

When the license was added, the stuff magically showed up on both Compact and Full framework and is built modular.
