After the user enters his / her license key, my application activates itself with that key (online). How do I store this activated state and the license key so that the next time the user opens the app, the app will know that it is already activated?

I suggest making the key dependent on a user specific thing license key and matching email to a file in "~/Library/Application Support/MyApplication who would never pay for anything....
Like license key and activated state.

I am going up the wall - avast does not let me enter a new license key ... and the instructions in the email are for Windows only.
When I start avast, I'm getting the message "Application Expired", and the options are to either Quit or Change License....

I threw out a Windows XP machine a while ago (the motherboard failed). I kept the hard drive and the XP installation media.

Before i go and install Windows 7 RTM i wanted to know how many keys are availble from a Single MSDN Volumne License Subsription? Are there any limits?

You could just have a license key for the application, and then check client in to the server with the key, and then you need to store the session details, like the IP address.
Application it's not worth it.
