Hoping someone has experience with both sql server and postgresql.
Between the two db's, which one is easier to scale? Is creating a read only db that mirrors the main db easier/harder than sql server?

Even so, if you guess at how many computers at Google's scale is challenging enough, it's pretty well understood and lots of other people do to scale well horizontally.
It's not like each query goes to the same computer.

Apparently the reason for the BigTable architecture has to do with the difficulty scaling relational databases when you're dealing with the massive number of servers that Google has to deal with.
