I have never had the opportunity to work on or with a team of programmers.
Can someone describe what it is like to work on a team. Who does what, when and why?

Otherwise.
In many places, especially larger business, the only way you will notice you are working on a team at all is the weekly status meetings.
It really comes down to the dynamics of the team.

If you only want to check out the Development branch, configure the build to check out
$/Team Project' the sub-folders.

I've always felt lucky to work in a small programming team. I think the most I've worked with is 11 programmers. What is it like working on a project with hundreds of developers? Thousands? What does scale and what doesn't?

More startups prefer to use already hosted solutions for their projects, it will cost less money and time .
Perhaps you want to check out Basecamp? Or set up a wiki of some kind, those are more useful than forums in my experience .
