It's actually the opposite of what you are thinking. Link has the initial lead, Gordon jumps ahead, Link gradually closes it and goes ahead, Gordon jumps ahead, etc.
Also, there has been a lot of discussion on this in other threads. Look for anything with cheating, tally, votes, etc.

How is Link killing DK so badly right now?
I loved every Donkey Kong Country game that came out, and if they'd ever made a fourth, I'd have bought that too. But there's a reason Ocarina of Time frequently appears on people's lists of best games ever. Granted, it is just one game, and there is no shortage of great Zelda games, but that's the one people remember. Link's riding that game's coattails to the finals on my bracket...

Do "Bribed Links" qualify as "Paid Links" to Google?
I don't think we should be calling them paid links, after all the benefit we get from opensource projects. And I think google also discounts them in some way, I am not sure what it is.
