Can I copy a VirtualBox vm from a linux machine to my Windows 7 machine and run it from there?
It's huge so I don't want to go through the hassle if it's not worth it.

YES! Just make sure the Virtual box version is the same (or at least close) .
That's half the beauty of virtualization -- they always present the same hardware .

I know I can use samba or nfs, but which is better for two linux machines to talk to each other or is there a better one than those two?

Don't run things like big databases on NFS.
There are some application compatability issues however.
It behaves just like a local filesystem, and it's reliable if one of the servers goes away .
I've used NFS since 2001 and still really like it .

From a Windows machine you can use BeyondExec to execute anything on a Windows machine....
Note that some virus psExec that you can run from a *nix box .
And BeyondExec on the Linux machine, you should be able to do what you want.

Download the live CDs of the distributions from the net, run them in your VM and use the one you like best .
No distribution is generally better than any other.
