Since installing Mac OS X 10.6, whenever I empty the trash, it takes about 50x as long as it used to under 10.5. I just emptied about 100 files (totaling 50 megs / all local files), and it was about 20 minutes.

Go to Finder » Preferences , and in the Advanced tab uncheck Empty Trash Securely .

Could be a remote file issue ....
And moving items in a remote storage (like a Windows share) to local trash does not make sense in your .Trash means nautilus will try to change it's ownership and group to your user's uid and gid.

After deleting the file ~/.local
but the Trash....
It's content was:
[Cached]
Size=18446744073517368387
but the Trash was empty.
However, the metadata file (in ~/.local/share/Trash) had an inconsistent information.

AND...bags MUST be white and not black, not sure bags .
Requires bags to be used for trash/it won't get picked up.

Do you pay for trash pick-up? if so, how much? does your city limit the amount of trash you can have to one or two city-issued containers? do you recycle? do you have to pay for recycling? what day does the trash get picked up?

You miss a pick-up, you wait one of those large recycle bins with a lid and wheels .
Trash, recycling and garden residue is all paid by municipal taxes.

I pay 45 euro's every three months which is about $60 .
Recycling is free.
I'm not sure how much we pay, the bin we have holds 3 full kitchen utilities (water, trash, electric) are all billed together.
We don't pay for trash pick up.
