Has anyone here ever attempted the direct picking of a sidebar wafer lock, and if so, what was your experience?

GM, Chrysler and Ford locks sometimes.
The newer Kwikset and Schlage Smartkey cylinders pick easily also.
Tibbe pick easily even though they do have a sidebar.
It depends on what you are working with.

You can always call a lock smith but they ....
Crow bar would be your best way.
You can get a basic one for around $30.
And save world) Don't use bobby pins use paperclip straightened out I'd recommend buying a real lock picking kit.

Additionally, I would get a simple lock to get on the right....
With that, you will truly learn how to pick locks, especially when you dive farther into more advanced locks that simple raking just wont cut it.
