About 3 years ago the rear lift gate started acting up. I would press the button on the gate, it would make a sound like it was going to open but wouldn't. After about 2-3 tries it would finally open. Well this winter it finally stopped working completely...

Would your gate open if you pressed hard on the door (like leaning ALL your weight the photos.
If I remember correctly at that point the rear gate still didn't work so I started the car and it started working.

Back tracking to the nature center, I'm guessing that is what you did .
I think the neighbors open and close that gate if the gate was locked .
I've never been locked "in" to a trail before.
