Any time my computer uses 50+% of its CPU for more than a few minutes, the power to my USB ports seems to be shut off, and then the CPU spikes to 100% and stays there. (syncing my iPhone is what was causing the 50% load)

Microsoft Word periodically saves backups while you work, but wordpad does not I'm afraid .

You need to add the SSH....
Can you ping the machine? Try to ssh with the "-v" switch to see if you get some more relevant info about the connection procedure .
As for your problem, impossible to say with the information given .
The scp command itself is OK.
