I've tried every possible I had the same issue when mine went out, but I just couldnt hear the grinding while driving in gear is extremely loud literally like ....
It is very loud, very embarrassing and i cant figure out what it is.

Was it like a really loud highish pitch grinding noise? I'm having that problem....
Axle was out of alignment.
Im glad i went there.
It rules out your brakes bc you are hearing really smooth .
Carrier bearing, street tacos sells em.

Like the title states, its happened about 6 times in the past 3 months. it happened 5 times before i did the oil change, and once today (did oil change 3 weeks ago) what happens is its usually the first start up of the day, after i let go of the ignition...

I've started having a loud/rough grinding noise from the rear end. It happens everytime I go through the 28-30mph while accelerating. NEVER happens during decel.

Its 15/16 socket if I remember right..
Drain the fluid and check for metal.
Most likely rear different is going out.

If your fan is making a grinding noise, it's very likely failing.
I don't know anything about Macs, but a grinding sound from a fan that happens at regular intervals to hit something else.
