I went to my first MMA striking session today and all of this was done wearing 'bag' gloves. With these you block punches the same way that you do in boxing, by covering your face and letting gloves absorb the impact. But this technique cannot be used...

But this technique cannot be used in an actual MMA fight.

Get a video practice by yourself.
It is ineffective to try learning martial arts or even MMA on your own.
Training MMA or any combat sport by yourself is similar to masturbating you.
By training alone.
Obviously wrestling, BJJ, Boxing, Kick Boxing, etc are good for transitioning to MMA, but what are some sports that are good for transitioning to MMA? I am talking sports like basketball, football, cross country, track, swimming, rugby, soccer etc... ...

Not point Contact.
Something full contact would be very effective, like Muay Thai .
Because you need to keep something as your backup for your MMA to mix with.
But you need a base for MMA.

Parkour gave me a great base of strength and athleticism when I started MMA.
