How do I tell if a SharePoint class is specific to WSS or MOSS?
For example, can I use the SPAudit class in MOSS only?

The SPAudit class works for WSS as well as MOSS, even though is located in the Microsoft.SharePoint.dll (which is WSS).
Is the Microsoft.SharePoint.Publishing.dll which is MOSS only.

What is the simplest way to query a WSS/MOSS list from a remote client
Using /_vti_bin/lists.asmx and XML fragments for the query seems to be a large chunk of work for a simple task?

Take note that WSS is not MOSS.
Search around for deals on MSDN.
CMS is part of MOSS not WSS.

Is it best practice to not use C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\wss\ for SharePoint? My concern is that the configuration wizard seems to look for this C: path and it may be too complicated to not use the default path(s),
