I'm restoring an old Buffalo drill press (actually 3, but I'm only keeping 1 ), it has an MT2 spindle and drill chuck, but I am wondering about getting an ER series collet holder with an MT2 shank, with tang, thinking that I could also use it in the tail...

Honestly if you feel your chuck is not accurate, get another drill chuck.
Issues aside from grip range of a drill chuck, namely not enough speed and too little feel.

I am new to the machine trades and was wondering why one would use a drill chuck over a collet for drilling. I understand that the drill shank may not be the right size for a collet and that can be changed by grinding the shank to fit. I was told that...

The typical drill chuck only goes up to 1/2" shank anyway.
Everything else goes other kind of holder.
I use a drill chuck to hold an edge finder and a co-ax indicator.
Better grip.

What are the views on large drill chucks in the 3/4"-1" cap range. I have keyless chucks for up to 5/8" but it would be nice to have a big keyed one. I'm looking at the ones that pop up every month in the ENCO/MSC sale flyers.

I don't use a big drill chuckSpeaking from my experience with large drill chucks I can say that the Rohm is a fairly good chuck.
A nearly new 18N on a No.4 MT shank from Ebay for $40, + $10.50 for shipping.

I have an older Dayton drill press. Drill bits wander badly so I thought the quill was bent. I took it out and today we put the dial indicator to it. The shaft is spot on as in the ring around the chuck but the drill bit is slightly off center in the ...

I would also try MSC, Enco, or McMaster car, just for grins .
ENCO: 1/2" Ball Bearing Style Chuck (p/n# 290-1510) and MT#2.
That holds up well and is reasonably priced.

Just picked up a Jacobs 59B Headstock chuck on flea bay.
Came in the mail today and I put on the lathe.
Chucking a dowel pin and some drill rod I came up with about .0035" of run out about an inch from the jaws.
Anybody have one? What kind of runout do...

Mine is a 58B in very good, don't be surprised if you tend to get chatter with the headstock chuck.
A smaller chuck with a MT tail and a drawbar,or get out the colletts.

Hi, all
I am new to machining and to this web site. I recently got a used Harbor Freight 3 in 1 model 5980. The mill has a Jacobs chuck in the quill head and I've read that one should not mill with a drill chuck. I understand it's better to use a tool...

But how would a mt be sucked in to close down the collet. I do not see a setscrew that might drive the drill bit. I do not think they are just...

The taper itself provides enough drive normally for a morse drill.

Hi,
I am hoping someone can help point me in the right direction. I am going to be drilling quite a few (200-300) 3/4" holes 3 5/8" deep in 1045 steel. The inside finish does NOT have to be smooth if that makes a difference. Any suggestions would be great...

Buy a good 3/4" drill bit and drill them?
It's a pretty easy job, if this isn't pre-hardened steel (which means a bit with long enough flutes).

Kev Ouch! I read the whole thread I personally don't like foot switches (I'm clumsy), I do like emergency stop buttons .
The best foot switch is the one that stops the drill.
