I guess that 50 billion dollars of tax payers money has paid off. They still have roughly half of their government loan to pay back as well. All that and they still cant beat Ford in sales.

It will all depend on the business itself and the intent of the business. Not all businesses qualify for non profit status. You should check the IRS web site for specific information on the kinds of NPO and what requirements must be met.
