The anime, or the manga. AKA, the animation, or the books.
Personally, I like the books. I think a lot of the art style is lost in the anime. Take Vampire Knight for instance. A very popular manga.

In America, Manga Entertainment have the least amount of anime licensed Bleach and Naruto fans there....
Why? because they waste money licensing a lot of terrible anime that no one wants to buy and lose money.
ADV went off the market.

That's what I'd say the biggest downfall of the anime is/has been.
People wanted the anime to embody, however they had to change that to try to attract the target market in that they have flaws and "grow" as people.
