If the microphone doesn't work with either, the unit's mic jack may not be connected properly buy it new, you need the mic, and you have some skill with a soldering iron, crack it open and inspect the mic wiring.

If it's not that - I remember having a similar problem a while back the mic).
If you're lucky, it's just feedback from the mic setting being so sensitive that it's picking up when you turn the mic on.

My brother just bought a pair of usb headphones/ mic to play a game. He really only wants to use the mic portion of the unit and leave the speakers.
Does anyone know of any setting that would could account for the usb headphones "muteing" the speakers...
