For the umpteenth time I'm battling with getting microphone input to work on an XP machine. I realise the solution might differ depending on the situation, but is there a standard checklist one can work through that will solve 90% of the problems?

That's a function usually called "Play the selected audio input device... .
Alternatively you expect to be able to hear yourself through the speakers though.
Press stop, then play and see if it hears you.

Ok so the digitizer on my milestone went bad about a month ago, i ordered one off ebay and installed it myself. unfortunately while doing so i ripped the flex ribbon that has the sensors attached to it. went on ebay again and ordered that part and installed...

OK, now, how to I get Audacity to stop using the Mic and go to line in on a lap top?
On a system that is fully operational, there is a pull down menu near the mic symbol at the top of the screen. It has 5 entries, one of which in "Line In RealTek AC'9...

Turn off the speakers Line In from the pull down menu in Audacity... .
Turn down the mic, no audio in Audacity.
Audacity only seem hear it through the microphone when the speakers are playing.
It plays as it should.

The other people can't hear, and i sound "underwater." Same....
As it uses the mic of the mobile this for several reasons, but a 'home polycom' was one of the main use cases .
The cable works a lot better for me and the other party hears me ok.

So i have a Laptop with integrated sound. I have a Microphone and a Headphone socket. I connected an external audio source to the microphone. I can record the source using Sound Recorder so the plug works and is configured, but I cannot hear the source...

I want to use Skype. Should I buy a webcam with built in microphone OR a webcam with a separate headset?
Will the built-in microphone have much worse audio quality? I'd rather not mess around with a headset if I can.

I don't think the audio quality will be different.
I hear no complaints about poor audio quality.
I do have a wireless headset though i prefer a microphone for video chat.
Looking like mickey mouse.
