They are labelled as "military equipment" instead of as..well dogs. They are trained to sniff out bombs and people hiding, then are put down because it is a massive financial/beaurocratic hassle to bring one home/adopt one.

I highly doubt a military dog has dog and not a ....
And 99% of the military dogs never see any actual violence in the wars the US has fought lately, they're all mostly sniffers for roadside bombs, not powerful breeds.
