Does military pay for our travel to our officer basic courses?
Whenever the military moves you you submit a travel claim. I didn't have to go to anything before USUHS because I did NROTC but from what I understand they cover traveling from your home of record to whatever your basic training school is. They then cover traveling from that place to USUHS. Yes traveling in a personally operated vehicle is allowed.

Why do people join the military?
If someone serves and is qualified for a GI Bill, and they don't go to school right away, can they get some of that money later on when they do decide to go to school? Does that money come out of the same GI Bill or out of subsequent ones?

Reagan home studied and joined in the Army Enlisted Reserve on April 29, 1937. He was appointed Second Lieutenant in the Officers Reserve Corps of the Cavalry on May 25, 1937, three years before the draft, and four years before WWII.

Because the military people are superior to us lowly civilians right? They should get less unconstitutional restrictions on their freedom than us plebes?

Is it ethical to counsel young people to join the military?
He is "gifted", but did not have superior self disipline and is more of a hands on learner. He graduated from high school this spring in an area with double digit unemployment. He is training for air traffic control, which is applicable to civilian life. In some ways, I feel that the military is unethical but I think that it is good for developing a career for him. I guess that if I were to counsel a young person about joining the military, I'd recommend training for a career path that had direct applications to civilian life.
