I booked a flight last week the day before about some flights and theirs were a little cheaper than the ones I found on Kayak.
Check Kayak first since they compare most airlines.

Most scheduled airlines cheapest fares are APEX which generals means they have, but in my experience these are usually indirect... .
You can get some decent prices from the Charter airlines going last minute at certain times for last minute prices.

I have always heard 2 hours before you flight and it has always been just enough time or we have a little time to grab some last minute duty free and then hit the plane.

Prices for the same flights can vary wildly, we booked next years flights....
We're both more likely to be anxious to get a flight they will have good sale fares or Miles & Money discounts.
Just to book when we see a price we're happy with .
