Why are there so many democrats in Germany?
Regarding the use of 'Democratic' in party names, it is perhaps notable that both the CDU and the FDP where founded post WW2, when there was a significant cultural imperative in West Germany to appear to be as committed to democracy as possible. This also manifests in other ways in the German institutional framework.

He would have had no choice but to go to the middle, with a Republican Congress. He was more liberal than Clinton instinctually, but would have governed towards the center like Clinton did.

They've historically opposed just about everything that would help people while shilling tirelessly for corporations. There are moderate Republican pols and voters obviously, but as a party, they've been nothing but hard-right scum during my lifetime.

The Democrats are in British political terms a centre right party, somewhere in the Thatcherite mould. Remember the problems they are having with their health bill, plus if you try explain things like child benefit, Sure start, or tax credits to an American they would think you are living in a communist country.
