There was a Republican incumbent, there is no way Obama and Hillary and a bunch of other Democrats them as news.
My dictionary - Webster's II New Riverside Dictionary - defines moderate thus: not extreme or excessive. But this is not necessarily a political definition. Any enlightenment would be appreciated. Thank you.

It all depends on who is using the word of view, they would be a moderate....
He's very use the word "moderate" to describe his political beliefs.
I would say my dh is a "moderate" - he's not extremely conservative or extremely liberal.
