I am just starting to plan a one-month road trip starting in Whitehorse to pick up a rental car and then go from there, and if I have enough time, I'd like to see a bit of Alaska too... I am older female travelling solo and have done several road trips...

Personally that month in Yukon and Alaska any time - it doesn't have to be June or July - if September or even OctoberJune is less crowded....
Be prepared for incredible mosquitoes in June.
