I'll keep it short: are there any reasonable alternatives to MPD as a remotely controlled music player? It should be controllable over the network and not require X server to run.

I've found that the iTunes player with most Linux versions, MAC, and Windows!
My newest favorite is XMPlay .
Even though you don't use the itunes music store.

cmus is ncurses based
I know mplayer can play mp3 and it can play http streams, so maybe that is a possible solution? Probably there are better... .
