Compare the depreciation amongst the used car against the new to them.
Some even make a profit.
A simple analogy first bought.
If budget permits, its better to get a new car due to higher paper value.

Worst case purchase difference is you sell the old car for $14,000 and buy the new one for $17,00....
New cars depreciation will also eat.
Also, with new car your insurance rates will go up.
That much in gas.

I just inherited a 2012 X5 xdrive50i w/ only 1,700 miles on it. According to the window sticker it has just about every option BMW could throw on it and it cost a hair under $80k (the car was paid for in cash).
While I realize how incredibly fortunate...
